Septic Tank and Sewage Treatment Plant Installations
When installing a Septic Tank, Waste Water or Sewage Treatment Plant there are a few things that will have to be done first……
1. What are the ground conditions like – wet or dry?
Depending on the ground conditions, there are several ways of installing septic tanks or sewage treatment plants, including a granular installation without the use of concrete. Additionally, the construction of the septic tank or treatment plant is a factor, for example is it made of fibreglass (GRP)?
2. What size tank do I need? There is a difference between commercial and domestic.
Sizing for a commercial treatment plant is measured in a different way from a domestic plant – for domestic applications the capacity of the tank is calculated on the basis of how many people could live there. For a commercial application however, the size of tank needed is based on the combined daily water usage of the business premises in question.
3. Do I have permission from the Environment Agency, and if not, how do I get it?
All septic tank, wastewater and sewage treatment plant installations must have permission from the Environment Agency. Have a look at our Sewage Waste Regulations page.
4. Do I need permission from the local authorities?
If you are making a new installation or replacing your old septic tank system you will need to inform your local building authorities.
